Tokyo Metropolitan Nosan High School: Cultivating Global Agricultural Leaders


Tokyo Metropolitan Nosan High School (東京都立農産高等学校) is a public agricultural high school located in Katsushika, Tokyo, Japan. Founded more than 70 years ago, it is the only agricultural high school in eastern Tokyo, offering specialised education that integrates hands-on agricultural practice with academic learning. The school aims to nurture students with both technical expertise and a strong sense of humanity, enabling them to contribute to sustainable food systems and local communities.

In early 2026, a group of seven volunteer students from Nosan High School took part in the school’s first-ever overseas study tour to Malaysia — a significant milestone in its more than seven decades of history. The programme was designed to provide students with learning experiences beyond Japan, while fostering international perspectives on agriculture, sustainability, and intercultural communication.

On the third day of the study tour, UTMy was honoured to welcome the visiting students to its campus. The visit began with an information session led by the Dean, Prof. Dr. Maki Tsujimura, who introduced the university’s educational philosophy and global academic environment. The students then experienced the essence of higher education through a problem-based learning (PBL) class conducted by Prof. Dr. Noriko Hiraishi, where they observed how interdisciplinary approaches are used to address real-world challenges. In addition, the students visited the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Yoichi Yamada, where they were introduced to advanced scientific equipment, including an electron microscope, and gained firsthand exposure to university-level research under expert guidance.

This visit offered the students a valuable opportunity to broaden their academic horizons and envision new possibilities for their future studies. By engaging with higher education in an international setting, the experience demonstrated how global learning can connect their interests in agriculture, science, and sustainability with wider academic pathways abroad, leaving a lasting impression as they consider their next steps beyond high school.
