UTMy Student Yukitaka Maeda Completes Internship at Pertama Farroalloys

2026.03.12

During the previous semester break from 24 January to 18 February 2026, some of our first-year and second-year students had the opportunity to participate in internships at various companies. Congratulations to everyone for completing their internship successfully and our utmost gratitude to the management and staff at each company for accepting our students!

During this period, a second-year student, Yukitaka Maeda, undertook an internship at Pertama Farroalloys.

Below is a comment about his internship experience:

"During this internship, I learned about geopolitics at the frontline of a global supply chain and had the opportunity to present my work to the Vice President.

One thing that impressed me most was how the relationship between the Sarawak state government and the federal government can change laws and systems, and how those changes affect business activities. I was surprised that basic business conditions, such as electricity prices and regulations, can change depending on the relationship between governments. This experience helped me understand that geopolitics is closely connected to business.

I also learned that silicomanganese, one of the products of Pertama Ferroalloys, is not only important for company profits but also related to global economic security. When I realized this, I felt that the work happening in front of me was connected to the global economy. It made me understand the large scale of the business.

Political systems, international relations, and the value of mineral resources are always changing. Through this internship, I realized the importance of following global political issues continuously, and my interest in geopolitics became stronger.

During my stay in Bintulu, I stayed with a coworker at their home. They were very kind and I had a very relaxed and comfortable stay. I have fond memories of working out, practicing golf, and playing pickleball together. They also cooked delicious meals for me and took me to local restaurants."

We hope that experiences like this will inspire other UTMy students to actively seek opportunities to explore different industries and develop their professional skills.

As a Japanese university, UTMy encourages students to undertake shorter internships during semester breaks. This approach allows students to gain experience with different companies and industries, helping them better understand their interests and future career paths.
