Strengthening Industry–Academia Collaboration

We were honoured to have the opportunity to visit Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn. Bhd. this week as part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen industry–academia collaboration.

Pertama Ferroalloys is a leading producer of manganese alloys and ferrosilicon—key materials used in steel manufacturing. The company operates a large-scale smelting plant at the Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu, Sarawak, which is recognised as the first facility of its kind in Malaysia.

In addition to its industrial excellence, Pertama Ferroalloys places strong emphasis on sustainability and community engagement. The company actively supports local communities through various programmes and partnerships.
Notably, Vice Chairman Mr. Yuki Nakamura, a graduate of the University of Tsukuba, plays an active role in the company’s operations as well as its community-focused initiatives.

During the visit, we discussed potential avenues for future collaboration, including internship programmes and other joint activities. Discussions also covered efforts toward decarbonisation, such as the company’s bamboo-planting initiatives aimed at environmental sustainability.

We are pleased to share that a UTMy student will be participating in a one-month internship programme at Pertama Ferroalloys starting from the end of this month. We are confident that this experience will provide valuable opportunities for the student to engage with the local community and apply the skills and knowledge gained through their studies at UTMy.
